Cat's tail

What is the purpose of the cat's tail? I do not know. To walk and hold it high. When the cat eats to lie down behind. When the cat is lying on the table knocking down my cigarette lighter, cigarettes, scissors and eyeglasses case. I know it shows a mood. To cover a nose when it is asleep curled up in one ball.
